In logistics, a hub is a central transshipment point or node within a transport system where goods are collected, sorted and distributed for onward transportation. It is therefore an important component of hub-and-spoke systems, in which goods are brought from various sources to a central point and transported from there to their destinations. In this context, it is also referred to as a distribution center.

Properties of a hub:

• Central location: Is important to optimize the transport route and create more efficient connections between different regions.
• Sorting and bundling: At a hub, incoming shipments are sorted, consolidated and prepared for the next stage of transportation. This can apply to both national and international transportation.
• Increased efficiency: The use of distribution centers enables logistics companies to make better use of transport capacities, optimize delivery times and reduce costs.

• Airports and freight centers: Large international logistics companies use hubs such as airports to sort and forward parcels and goods.
• Distribution centers: In e-commerce logistics, warehouses and distribution centers act as hubs where goods from various suppliers arrive, are sorted and distributed to customers.
