Full truck load (FTL)

Full truckload, also known as FTL , stands for full truckload in the transportation industry. This term is used when a shipper has enough goods to fill the entire loading space of a truck so that the transport is only used for this one load. In contrast to LTL (Less Than Truckload), where several partial loads from different shippers are transported in one truck, FTL transportation means that the entire truck capacity belongs to a single shipper.

Main features of FTL (Full Truckload):

1. Complete truck load: The load fills the entire truck or requires the full capacity exclusively, regardless of whether it is the maximum weight or the maximum volume.
2. Direct transport: FTL transports are usually carried out directly from the sender to the recipient, without intermediate stops or reloading. This shortens the transportation time and reduces the risk of damage or loss, as the cargo is not transshipped.
3. Cost efficiency for large quantities: For large shipments, FTL transport is often more cost-effective than LTL, as there are no additional handling or reloading costs and the transport time is shorter.
4. Special requirements: FTL is also frequently used when there are special transportation requirements, such as temperature-controlled loads, hazardous goods transportation or when the freight is very sensitive and should not be mixed with other loads.
5. Speed and flexibility: Since the truck drives exclusively for the shipper, the delivery dates and routes can often be arranged more flexibly and according to the shipper’s needs.

When FTL makes sense:

• When a company has enough goods to fill the entire truck.
• When fast and direct delivery without reloading is required.
• If special transport conditions are required (e.g. hazardous goods, fresh or temperature-sensitive goods).
• If the cargo is so valuable or sensitive that exclusive transport is preferred in order to minimize risks.
