A freight forwarder is a service provider in the transport industry whose main task is to organize the shipment of goods on behalf of a shipper. As a rule, they do not carry out the transportation themselves, but commission carriers or other transport companies to do so. He acts as an intermediary between the shipper and the carrier and takes care of the logistical aspects of the transport.

Tasks of a freight forwarder:

1. Planning and organization:
   • The freight forwarder plans the best possible mode of transportation (road, air, rail or sea) and the route to transport the goods safely and efficiently to their destination.
2. Means of transportation and choice of partner:
   • He selects suitable carriers or transport partners and coordinates their use for the actual transportation.
3. Packaging and storage:
   • In some cases, the freight forwarder also organizes the packaging, storage and handling of the goods.
4. Customs clearance:
   • For international shipments, the freight forwarder takes care of the necessary customs formalities and ensures that all legal requirements are met.
5. Insurance:
   • Freight forwarders often also offer transport insurance to protect the goods against loss, damage or theft.
6. Liability:
   • In contrast to the carrier, the forwarder assumes no direct liability for the goods during transport, unless there is a gross error in the organization of the transport.

Difference to the carrier:

While the carrier itself carries out the physical transport of the goods, the freight forwarder takes over the organization and planning of the transport. As a rule, they work together with various carriers in order to organize the entire logistics process efficiently.

Example:

A company that wants to ship goods internationally hires a freight forwarder to organize and coordinate the entire process – from selecting the means of transport to customs clearance and final delivery.
