The share of diesel costs (DKA) in the total costs varies depending on the company and activity and can only be calculated on a case-by-case basis. For our company, Spedition-Albrecht, we have calculated a diesel cost share (DKA) of 30% in our area of operation, international long-distance transportation with an annual mileage of 180 thousand kilometers, whereby this naturally increases proportionally with rising fuel prices despite reduced consumption values due to better engine technology.
The DKA in a local transport company as well as in national long-distance transport is significantly lower.
This results in the following calculation for a diesel price escalation clause(diesel floater):
Determined diesel price index change ( DPI-V ) = 20% ( example value ) ; diesel cost share ( DKA ) = 30%
(DPI-V) x (DKA) = 0.20 x 0.30 = 0.06 = 6 %
Result: To compensate for the additional diesel costs, the freight price must be increased by 6%.
To simplify these calculations, we have developed a diesel floater that shows the diesel price development in relation to the freight rate adjustment.
Further information and the calculations can be found under diesel floater, diesel price escalation clause and the diesel price index.
