A carrier is a person or company that undertakes the transportation of goods on a commercial basis and transports them from a sender (consignor) to a recipient (customer). The carrier is responsible for carrying out the transportation on its own responsibility and with its own means of transport (e.g. truck, ship, train or plane) and concludes a freight contract with the sender for this purpose.
Tasks of a freight forwarder
- Organization and execution of the transport:
- The carrier plans and carries out the transportation of the goods, selects the appropriate means of transport and ensures that the freight arrives at its destination safely and on time.
- Loading and securing the goods:
- He is also responsible for the proper loading and securing of the goods so that no damage occurs during transportation.
- Liability for the goods:
- The carrier is liable for loss of or damage to the goods occurring during transportation. Exceptions may be the occurrence of force majeure or another exclusion of liability. The liability regulations are regulated in the freight contract and statutory regulations such as the German Commercial Code (HGB).
- Documentation and shipping documents:
- The carrier prepares documents such as the consignment note (proof of acceptance and transportation of the goods). These must be carried during transportation.
- Coordination with transshipment points (hubs):
- For larger shipments or international deliveries, the carrier often coordinates the transport via various transshipment points or logistics centers in order to distribute the goods between different means of transport or routes.
The carrier plans and carries out the transportation of the goods, selects the appropriate means of transport and ensures that the freight arrives at its destination safely and on time.
Types of carriers:
- Road transportation: A company that handles the transportation of goods via trucks or smaller delivery vehicles (e.g. freight forwarders, courier services, express deliveries).
- Ocean carrier: A company that transports goods by sea, often using container ships.
- Air freight carrier: A company that transports goods by air, especially for international and time-critical deliveries.
- Rail freight carrier: A company that transports goods by train, especially for the transportation of bulk goods or containers over long distances.
Conclusion:
The carrier plays a central role in the transportation of goods, as he is responsible for the actual execution of the transport and for the safe and timely delivery of the goods.
What is the difference to a freight forwarder?
The carrier carries out the actual transport with its own vehicles (trucks, ships, aircraft), while a freight forwarder organizes and plans the transport on behalf of the shipper. The freight forwarder can commission one or more carriers with the transportation, but does not usually transport the goods itself.
